UPDATE: Olde Bay Tavern restaurant in North Beach, ND close on August 11, 2013. We are sorry to see them go and they will be missed!
A friend recently moved to Calvert County from Washington State, and I asked her to bring her kids and meet me at North Beach a few days after their arrival. I decided that we’d have lunch at Olde Bay Tavern and then explore the town for a bit. I had never been to “OBT” before, but I liked the homey look of the place and the scrumptious-looking menu.
There were 6 of us, so the best seating option was in the sunroom at the front of the restaurant. From there, we could see a view down the street to the Chesapeake Bay. Our server grabbed several activity books and crayons for the kids, and we settled in for a relaxing lunch.
First thing’s first: fried pickles! I got a coupon for a free appetizer (sign up for their mailing list), and my friend agreed to share them with me. Even the kids wanted to try them. Served with OBT’s special sauce, they are a delicious sweet and savory treat (the pickles are made in-house, by the way).
All the kids ordered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches off the kids’ menu, but this isn’t your run-of-the-mill pb&j. My friend took a bite of her daughter’s sandwich and said it tasted like homemade jam and bread. She said it reminded her of cake. These sandwiches are huge, so either order them to share or prepare to take some home.
I ordered a delicious shrimp po’boy. The jumbo shrimp were cooked just right with a golden, crispy coating. The sandwich was dressed with OBT sauce and sprinkles of Old Bay (I confess that I actually just ate the shrimp and sauce and left the toasted bun behind because I didn’t want to get too full). My friend got a generously sized pulled pork quesadilla with pineapple salsa and sour cream. We each got side salads with our orders – spinach for me, mixed greens for her.
We left feeling satisfied and ready for a day of fun in North Beach. I’ll definitely be back! What’s your favorite Olde Bay Tavern food, leave a comment below.
