Stoney’s Seafood House Broomes Island has such a great outdoor atmosphere that I just couldn’t keep it from you any longer. My husband and I moved to St. Leonard a little over a year ago. During this time, we have been on the lookout for good restaurants in the southern end of the county. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. So, our quest for an outdoor, scenic restaurant with great food has taken us to many different places.
Stoney’s of Brooms Island is by far our favorite spot. You get to the restaurant via Broomes Island Road. The drive takes you back to a calmer, quainter Calvert County. The hustle and bustle of busy Route 4 is miles from your thoughts. Rather come via the water? You can do that too!
You can be inside and enjoy the beautiful views, outdoors on their deck/floating deck, hanging out in one of the two bars, or playing corn hole/horseshoes under their large tent. The hubby and I always opt for the floating deck. Not only do you have an amazing view, but you also have the neat feeling of floating. Don’t worry, it doesn’t rock you to the point of being sick.
Stoney’s is well known for their crabcakes and steamed crabs. I personally love the Crab Pretzel. You can find it under the appetizer section of the menu. It’s a pretzel baked with cheese and topped with mixed greens and jumbo lump crab meat. It’s served with a zesty honey mustard dressing. Don’t let them fool you that it’s big enough for two. After one bite you will realize that you no longer wish to share – no matter how cute your date is.
Not that I need another reason to love Stoney’s, but they now offer Doggie Dining at all locations. What a fun way to spend the afternoon with your best friend.

Of all the nice places in Calvert to eat, Stoneys at Broomes Is is, by far, our favorite. We nearly always have the crab cake dinner which is consistently good, and we’ve been going there for over 20 years. The location and view of the River is so relaxing, especially at dusk. Our favorite memory is seeing a group of Washington Capitals hockey teammates dining at an adjacent table about 10 years ago. They had arrived by boat. They were obviously aware that Stoney’s reputation as a great place to dine goes beyond Calvert’s county line.
@Rich Pfleiderer Thanks so much for sharing. It certainly would be fun to see the Capitals Hockey team at a table right next to you. I love crab cakes too!
