My husband and I weren’t living in Calvert County long before we started seeking out the restaurants that would become our regular favorites. He loves Italian above all else (particularly the calzones at Three Brothers in Prince Frederick), but what I really wanted to find was a place for good Mexican. I got the opportunity when a friend came to visit me within two weeks of us moving to Huntingtown. She was game to go out for lunch, so we found ourselves at Mexico Restaurant.
Though the décor is everything you would expect from such a restaurant, the menu surprised me. There were more choices than I have ever seen at any other Mexican restaurant I’ve been to. I wanted to try everything, but then I reminded myself that I could come back whenever I wanted and try something different each time.
The potato enchiladas (Enchiladas del Pueblo) intrigued me. Sadly, I was informed that they were not available that day. Instead I ordered huevos rancheros. I regret nothing. I had never had that dish before anywhere and I immediately decided that I need to have more huevos rancheros in my life. It was the perfect winter Sunday lunch.
The second time I went back to Mexico Restaurant, I finally got the potato enchiladas. Oh, yes. Starch wrapped in starch with a side of rice…delicious carb overload.
Recently, my husband and I went to the new Plaza Mexico in North Beach. The menu is very similar to Mexico Restaurant—they are owned by the same family—but the ambience is a little different. This time, I happily devoured a plate of crab enchiladas and sipped a very strong but delicious peach sangria, and my husband enjoyed a chicken quesadilla. I actually like this location a bit better than Huntingtown, but you can’t go wrong with either if you’re craving Mexican food.
