If you enjoy attending free outdoor performances during the summer, you may want to look at the schedule for the College of Southern Maryland’s Twilight Performance Series this year. The Prince Frederick, La Plata, and Leonardtown campuses offer free concerts and plays, with the Prince Frederick campus holding their performances on Thursday nights. During inclement weather (or even just a threat of bad weather), the performances are moved indoors.
The Prince Frederick campus kicks off their 2013 series July 18th with the Jackson Murphy Band. The following Thursday is a concert by CSM’s Latin Ensemble. The final performance is held on August 1st – a family-friendly play called The Fisherman and His Wife.
I attended a performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Prince Frederick campus last summer, featuring three student actors with minimal props and costumes. It was marvelously done, and a real treat for everyone in attendance that night. Door prizes were given away during intermission, and I think just about everyone in the audience got something (I got a CSM Twilight Performance Series t-shirt that I wear often). It is an enjoyable way to spend an evening.
While you don’t need tickets to attend these performances, you may want to show up early for good seats, particularly if you think it might be indoors. The play last year was moved inside because of the threat of severe storms, and there was very limited seating. All events start at 6:45 p.m. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs and a picnic.
I plan to be at the Latin Ensemble concert this year. I’m looking forward to a night of free fun with friends. Hope to see you there!
