If you spend your Wednesday nights on the couch watching TV, you might want to consider shaking things up a bit. The Prince Frederick branch of Calvert Library hosts Cinema Café on the first Wednesday of the month. However, it doesn’t take place every month, so you may want to check their schedule.
They often show recent movies. Upcoming movies include Argo and The Great Gatsby. I went to a showing of The Help. I remember the library staff mentioning that The Ides of March would be the following month’s film. All of these movies have been released in recent years, but the library also shows older movies on occasion. For example, Rudy is coming up in October.
Sure, you can watch these movies at home on your television, but coming to the library is kind of like going to the movie theater. You get to see it on a movie screen, and you get actual movie theater popcorn (it comes from Apex Cinemas just down the street). Depending on the movie, you may even get additional snacks that are relevant to the film. For The Help, we each got a slice of homemade chocolate pie.
The movie is generally followed by a short discussion, but you aren’t expected to participate if you don’t want to. I was mainly content to just listen to what other people had to say about it (and there was quite a large turnout that night). Of course, it’s entirely up to you whether you stay for the discussion part at all.
I found that Cinema Café is a good way to get together with friends mid-week and still get home early enough, since for most people, it’s a school and work night. The movie starts at 6 p.m. and the discussion ends around 8:30. Best of all, it’s free. You can’t go to a movie theater and get popcorn and a movie for that price.
