In the heart of St. Leonard, you will find two little buildings decorated with paw prints and animals. This is The S.P.O.T, which stands for “Stop Pet Overpopulation Thrift Shop.” This nonprofit thrift store uses the profits from sales to fund low-cost spay and neuter procedures for cats and dogs. They are dedicated to ending the euthanasia of healthy animals simply because of an overpopulation issue. In 2013 alone, The S.P.O.T funded 782 spays and neuters! In addition, The S.P.O.T has also awarded grants to Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, The Humane Society of Calvert County, Pets With Disabilities, and Second Hope Rescue.
Although it may seem unassuming from the outside, The S.P.O.T is filled with treasures big and small! In the main brick building, you can shop for toys, clothes, shoes, household items, kitchen appliances, music, books, and just about anything else you may need. Walk next door to the white building to peruse their display of furniture, bikes, strollers, wall art, and other large items.
As a thrift store lover myself, I stop in as often as I can to see what’s new in the store. If you want to snag a good deal, you have to visit often. New donations pour in daily! Over the years since the S.P.O.T has been open, I have purchased games for my kids, a cane for a friend recovering from surgery, a bike for my son, a stroller for my daughter, a coffee maker, tap shoes, brand new Under Armour tennis shoes (score!), a ton of clothes, and a whole lot more! The SPOT offers a great deal on kids clothes: you can fill a large reusable grocery bag for $15. If you can fit it in the bag, they will give it to you! This is my favorite thing about The S.P.O.T. I have gotten some awesome clothes with this deal for just a fraction of the price! Hmmm. Maybe I shouldn’t tell you this — I might get some competition!
The S.P.O.T is open Wednesday-Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 12-5. Donations are welcome Wednesday-Friday 10-4:30 and Saturday 10-4. All donations are tax-deductible and you may request a donation receipt.
If you’re looking for quality items at great prices and love helping out a good cause, The S.P.O.T is the spot for you!
