One of my favorite family traditions is the annual trip to the pumpkin patches. We’d wear our ugliest boots and prepare for a tromp through the mud to find the “perfect pumpkin.” I’m sure you’ve seen them showing up at grocery stores already, but the real fun is heading to the farm.
Thankfully, we have three wonderful farms here in Calvert County that provide a true autumn family experience that your kids will love complete with corn mazes and hayrides.
Activities cost extra, but the prices are reasonable and they all take credit cards. They’re really doing a great job this year trying new things and making it a special experience for you. Some new surprises are still in the works, so check their websites and FB pages for updates throughout October and we’ll keep you posted here as well.
Many of your favorite farm stands will have pumpkins and gourds too, but these three turn the outing into an event. So pack up the family and enjoy the fun. Just don’t forget your camera.

Hours: Monday 10-6, Tuesday – Thursday 11-6, Friday 10-6, Saturday 9-6, Sunday 10-6
Just north of the Calvert Memorial Hospital on route 4, the Mulberry Hill Farm makes autumn fun for all ages. Beginning this weekend, September 21st, there will be pumpkins available to complement their beautiful mums.
On September 28th and running weekends through Halloween, the real fun starts with a moon bounce for kids, a corn maze, and cider tastings. Adults will enjoy free wine tastings on select weekends as well. Families can even buy food and snow cones, so you can make an afternoon of it running through the maze and picking out your pumpkins, pre-picked and ready for you at the stand.
Spider Hall Farm

Prince Frederick, MD

Hours: Monday – Friday 10-7, Saturday – Sunday 10-6
On September 21st, Spider Hall Farms opens for the pick-your-own pumpkin patch. This is the closest thing you’ll get to the patches of the “old days” when you can tromp around a field. The pumpkins are pre-cut, but the kids enjoy the hayride out and back and the time running from pumpkin to pumpkin to find the perfect one. You don’t have to do the hayride if you don’t want to. There are plenty of perfect pumpkins at the farm stand.
The corn maze is always fun. It’s big enough for children to enjoy, but not so big that you’ll feel lost. Weekends are especially fun with Mrs. Moo’s ice cream and apple cider slushies. There’s “healthy food” too (but I haven’t tried that yet).
Horsmon Farm
1865 Horsmon Farm Lane
Saint Leonard, Maryland 20685
Credit Cards Accepted
Hours: Monday – Thursday 3pm-6pm, Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm
If you have tiny kids too little for a corn maze, then head on over to Horsmon Farm to try out their sorghum maze. My girls loved it. Sorghum is shorter, so your kids can run and you can see them a little better. Horsmon’s fall activities started early this year on September 14th, but they’ll be open through Halloween as well.
After the maze, hop on the hayride to the barn to feed the goats and pet the horse and cows. The animals are very sweet and gentle. You’ll visit either the pond or the pigs on your ride back. At the barn you’ll find beautiful mums and pumpkins and gourds of all sizes. You can get hay bales and corn stalks too for your holiday decorating.

I visited the Mulberry Hill Farms corn maze & bought pumpkins & grandkids did the moon bounce & my thoughts are…a lame corn maze, over priced pumpkins that cost $14.00 a piece and a moon bounce that kids had to also pay $2.00 to be able to to into it. I would not recommend anybody to go there because of the cost. As I was standing their watching my 2 grandkids jump inside the moon Bounce another car pulled up & the kids came running to join in the fun of the moon bounce only to see directly in front of it a $2.00 per person sign. I felt horrible for those kids because there were at least 5 of the & the were full of happiness & laughter until the oldest one saw the sign. Their faces dropped down & smiles gone as they headed back to their car. I felt horrible for this family because I knew this was not for the kids or the community but only to fill the pockets of these people. As we had just spent 28.00 for a corn maze, 58.00 in pumpkins & $4.00 in a moon bounce, a total of $90.00 dollars! No family can afford this stop. You can go down the street to Giant & pay $5.00 a pumpkin, so instead of 4 pumpkins we could have gotten 11 big pumpkins & still pay less than this place. I came from Virginia to take my grandkids out for this & I saw 4 people at the register with no one asking if we needed help & after finding out they had a corn maze we paid & they sent us around to the back of the stand & we just started walking in hopes to find the beginning of the maze, but the lady waved & yelled over to us, “not that way, you need to come back and see that marker leaning down, that’s the beginning” oh my gosh! 10 minutes was it and basically just a dirt trail, nothing spooky or anything. Very disappointed. Then upon leaving we saw another little sign that says,”$5.00 bracket gets you a corn maze, moon bounce and a drink of some sorts” so we paid $4.00 each corn maze & $2.00 each moon bounce which was already over their $5.00 special and they didn’t even tell us about it! Word of mouth will get out to others that this place is a rip off! Now if they would greet you as you walk in & allow the moon bounce free with the purchase of either a corn maze or a pumpkin it would have been better, but I just felt like our pockets were picked clean and nobody had a smile on their face. I saw more people drive up & get right back in their cars all because of over priced pumpkins and no free bounces. So if you want to charge like this be prepared for no customers!
