UPDATE: Monterey Mexican Restaurant has been shutdown due to Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) violations. A federal lawsuit is pending.
If you’re craving Mexican food there is no shortage of restaurants in Calvert County. My husband and I decided to stray from our normal “Mexican place” and try something new. Monterey located in Lusby, MD was our destination.
When we arrived, we knew right away that we wanted to sit outside. It was a beautiful summer night with a nice breeze. The restaurant has a large patio area. There are different sized tables with umbrellas to block the sun. The atmosphere felt great.
The menu had many dishes that sounded yummy. I decided on the Chimichangas, one beef and one chicken. My husband went with the California Fish Tacos. His love of fish tacos started when he first had them in California. I was excited to see if they would be as good.
While we waited for our food, we shared a Mango Daiquiri. It was a hard decision to make on the mango flavor; there were so many flavor choices. The drink was nice to look at and came topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
Dinner arrived in a very timely manner. The colorful plates made the food look very appealing. My first bite of my Chimichangas made me moan. They were the best that I ever had. I could not believe what I had been previously calling my favorite. My husband was also in heaven with his fish tacos. They were very flavorful with a kick. We both ate in silence, not typical for us, but we were enjoying the food so much.
While we were eating, we also got to watch guacamole made fresh table-side. It was something I have never seen done before. Having already eaten our meals we said that we would come back to try the fresh guac another time.
I am so glad that we decided to finally try Monterey. It was the best Mexican food that I have had in Calvert County. The atmosphere was great and the servers were all very pleasant. It was a great experience that I hope to repeat soon!

Opinions they say are like noses, everybody has one and they’re all different. My wife and I were unimpressed by that place. It was at best OK.

Frank Eagen, sorry to hear that it didn’t meet your expectations. You are correct that every person has their own opinion. There are so many factors affecting each single visit to a restaurant: chef, capacity of the restaurant, wait staff, etc. I know it shouldn’t matter but in many cases it does. I guess each person will just have to try it out for themselves.
