Chesapeake Beach is festive during the holiday season with the traditional dazzling light displays throughout the town. North Beach also gets in the spirit by lining the boardwalk and store fronts with lights and garland. The whole scene feels like a page out of a Norman Rockwell photo book. For the last eight years, the town of Chesapeake Beach has held a “Brightest Beacon on the Bay” contest: think Clark Griswold from Christmas Vacation meets a touch of class.
From December 1 – 12, Chesapeake Beach holds its annual decorating contest. Residents are encourages to decorate their home, townhouse, business, or boat to compete for the Brightest Beacon on the Bay.
My family likes to drive around the Twin Beaches with hot chocolate in our travel mugs, carols on the radio, and look at the lights stretched all along Route 260 and 261. This is an inexpensive family activity that does not take too long and can even been done of a rainy or snowy night. Start a new tradition and invite your friends and family to visit and take a self-guided driving tour to see the “Brightest Beacon on the Bay” winners as well as the beautiful town displays.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. Judging takes place on December 15 after dusk. Prizes will be awarded for first thru third places in each category, as well as the grand prize of “Brightest Beacon.” Last year they even had an Honorable Mention category because the participants’ enthusiasm was overwhelming.
A “Brightest Beacon” winner’s list will be available at Town Hall or on the Chesapeake Beach Website on Friday, December 20.
